In the fall of 2006 Alix McCauley launched a custom clothing line that fused her passion for comfort, style, and simplicity with her beautifully unique designs. Alix and her family now introduce a ready to wear line of beautiful casual knit clothing. A line that is built for layering, while incorporating a stylish edge. Based in Sebastopol California, the current production is all handmade with an objective to maintain the highest standards in socially responsible methods of production. Treehouse28 offers a sustainable solution to fashion. The use of organic, recycled materials and low impact practices help keep our planet healthy and strong for generations to come.

The organic cotton used at Treehouse 28 is grown in Turkey, certified SKAL, and milled in a longstanding organic fabric mill in Canada. There is a small amount of spandex in the fabric, usually less than 9%, which gives it the top quality stretch, the small percentage in the fabric means it can be washed in cold water, no dryer is needed and no wrinkling, so no ironing is required, making Treehouse 28 clothing perfect for traveling and for children. Treehouse 28 offers a sustainable solution to fashion.  Not only does our product offer the basic benefits associated with low impact manufacturing our product has a very strong after purchase life cycle. No ironing, no dryer and cold water wash make our product a low-impact after-purchase product with a long life cycle due to high quality fabrics and stitching.

Treehouse 28 Inc. is dedicated to becoming a leading locally produced clothing line that promotes the use of organic cotton and non-organic cotton with low-impact practices for its products. Our entire line is designed from a cotton/spandex mix, giving us the ability to to use our materials proficiently and minimize waste. Our product is produced in-house using locally sourced materials where possible, we are conscious of the carbon footprint of our fabric. We are primarily an internet based company so the waste involved in the fashion retail model is avoided. We are a family owned and run business; our goal is to become a local equal opportunity employer, offering fair market salary and company ownership incentives for our workers. Even in the first year of growing the company, we have worked with local talent to help develop our website, clothing patterns and grading as well as local marketing and business consultants.

A list of our goals:

  • To be a leading international supplier of eco-friendly and fair labor clothing.
  • To create seasonal fashion lines that aids in the reduction of chemicals and carbon on the planet.
  • To offer customers a product that not only is created with green ethos but that contribute to that ethos after purchase by reducing the need for dryers and ironing.
  • To bring the highest level of design and sophistication into the niche market of eco-clothing. Promote low impact consumer behavior through internet technologies and market trends.
  • To be socially responsible to the communities where manufacturing and production exist.
  • To promote local employment and fair trade regulations in the supply chain.
  • To reduce the transportation of products throughout the entire supply chain.
  • To encourage environmentally and socially sound responsibilities in our customers.
  • To grow the business through Horizontal Integration, allowing further control over supply chain processes.

Benefits of Organic Fabric:

  • Approximately 25% of all insecticides and more than 10% of the pesticides used in the world are used to grow cotton.
  • It takes 1/3 lb. of pesticides and fertilizers to produce enough cotton to make just one t-shirt.
  • Organically grown cotton uses beneficial insects and biological and cultural practices to control pests and build strong soil.
  • Hemp, bamboo and even recycled soda pop bottles are also being made into t-shirts, pants, skirts, blouses, and dresses.
  • Each year, non-organic cotton producers around the world use nearly $2.6 billion worth of pesticides
  • Problems linked to pesticide use include: reduced soil fertility, frequent water pollution, reduced biodiversity in the surrounding areas and wild animal and livestock poisoning. Source: Pesticide Action Network North America (PANNA)

Dye-Process for Sustainable Fibers:

  • Dyes utilized are better for the environment as they have the lowest impact in terms of temperature, water use, and dye-exhaustion.
  • Dyeing is done with low-salt (food grade only) Dyes are AZO and DIOXAZINE free.
  • Dye Machinery is soft flow; utilizing the minimum amount of water possible.
  • Dye House is equipped with a water recovery and treatment system, as well as a heat recovery system.
  • All knitting, dyeing, and finishing equipment is cleaned prior to processing all organic and natural knit fabrics
